Shirley Wicker, Director of the Hatteras Island Ocean Center
Shirley joined the Hatteras Island Ocean Center team in March of 2020 after having served as a volunteer. As the director, her primary mission is to provide educational opportunities for all students and to develop environmental programming and stewardship opportunities for the Hatteras Island community and tourists. Shirley trains and provides leadership for all Ocean Center interns and volunteers and helps students develop their career goals while educating the public on the unique biological and historical characteristics of Hatteras Island, and in the daily operations of a non-profit organization. Shirley graduated from Ramapo College of New Jersey with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology in 1980. A life long citizen scientist, Shirley has been visiting Hatteras yearly since 1988 and became a permanent resident in 2019.
